Imprisonment brings with it an obligation of inmate rehabilitation. It is ethically and economically essential due to the high rates of incarceration and the cycle of recidivism. As part of the Barbados Prison Service’s rehabilitative programme, inmates are provided with the opportunity to participate in vocational and educational programmes, which will prepare them for their reintegration into the community.
Inmates are allocated to vocational programs from the assessment of Sentence Management and authorized by the Inmate Review Board (IRB).
The inmates’ educational needs are done through baselining tools, such as: Barbados Adult Literacy Assessment (BALA) and English and Mathematics tests.
The Barbados Prison Service have two libraries, one housed in the Female Prison, the other in the Education Department of the Male Prison.
